About second-hand machines for Spring onions

Spring onions are also known as scallions, green onions, and as ‘schanulleke’ in Flanders. Like the common onion, this vegetable belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. In terms of flavour and crop, spring onion looks like a cross between the common onion and a leek. Because this crop is so similar to these two, the cultivation and processing of spring onion also has similarities to onions and leeks.

Several machines are needed for growing and processing spring onion. Most of the cultivation and processing is done by machines, and this is really the only way to profitably grow this crop on a large scale. Do you want to start growing spring onions, or are your current machines in need of replacement? If so, you may be facing a hefty investment whose ROI (return on investment) can take a long time. Fortunately, it is easy to save a considerable amount of money by buying used rather than new machinery for growing spring onion. Used machines, if quality machines are chosen, often last for years, and require a significantly lower investment.

At Duijndam Machines, we always have a large stock of machines suitable for growing and processing spring onions. On this page you will find all our spring onion machines. All machines come with comprehensive and detailed descriptions and photos. If you still have any questions, do not hesitate to contact one of our experts.

Sowing and planting machines for spring onion

As spring onion resembles onion and leek, its cultivation is also similar to this. As with onions, spring onions can be grown in two ways: using a pneumatic sowing machine or a planting machine for soil blocks.

Washing machines for spring onion

After spring onions are taken from the fields, they need to be properly processed before they can go to consumers. When the spring onion comes off the land, there are several more steps to take. First, the roots and haulm must be cut off. This is done in a spring onion washing machine. This washer cuts the haulm and roots to a pre-set length. After this, the spring onion is cleaned of all soil residues using water sprayers and soft brushes.

Finally, there will be space at the output conveyor of the washer to manually remove the last leaves and dirt if needed, leaving a clean end product.

Spring onion washing machines are very similar to leek washing machines. As a result, smaller growers sometimes choose to convert a leek washing machine to make it suitable for spring onion. Because spring onion is a more fragile product than leeks, in this case the rubber brushes used to clean the spring onion are replaced. The brushes used for this crop are softer and finer than those used for cleaning leeks.

Processing and packaging spring onion

After cleaning, the spring onion can enter the final stage: processing and packaging. Spring onion is mostly sold in packs or by the bunch. Some washing machines have an integrated binding machine, which ties the spring onion into bunches right after washing. In this case, a belt is placed above the output conveyor of the washer, which carries the bunches of spring onion to one or two binding machines.

Should this not be the case, you can opt for a separate binding machine. These elastic binding machines with food-safe elastic band are universally applicable for many different flowers and vegetables, including spring onion.

Flow pack machines or top seal machines are used for packing spring onions in plastic. To complete the product, after packaging, a labelling machine can be added to the line if it is not integrated into the packaging machine. This machine sticks labels on the product with, for example, the weight and price.
