Avocados: these days, it impossible to imagine a Dutch supermarket without them. However, until fairly recently, this fruit that originates from Central America was not so well known in our country. This has changed in recent years. In the Netherlands, we eat an average of 2.2 Kg of avocado per person, making us one of the largest consumers of Avocados in Europe. Processing all these avocodos requires different machines. 

Avocado sorting machines

Avocados can be sorted in different ways; by size, weight, colour, internal and/or external quality. For avocado exports, sorting by weight is usually most important, as the fruit trade works with different weight classes per fruit. 

Other types of round fruit can often be sorted with the same machine, but whether the avocado sorting machine can also sort other types of fruit depends on the type of cups or carriers. The avocado sorting machines are made to minimise the risk of impact and damage during the sorting process and preserve their original quality. Sorting machines are often equipped with brushes at the exits and a singulator, which is how the machine prevents the avocados from colliding.

Once the avocados are sorted, they end up on a collection table or a picking belt. From here, boxes can be filled manually. They can also be packed small at a later time.

Packaging machine for avocados 

To pack avocados, different types of packaging machines can be used, such as: 

• Flow pack machines
  • With these machines, the avocados are packed separately, on a foodtainer tray or in a kilo tray. In flow packing, a product is hermetically sealed in a plastic container with air in a single 'flow'. The plastic used is of higher quality than other films and can be either printed or transparently sealed. A horizontal flow pack machine is also suitable to be used for packing other fruits, such as apricots, nectarines and pears. The flow pack machine can also be combined with a multi-head weighing machine. This weighing machine weighs fruit accurately and quickly.

• Tray seal machines
  • Besides flow pack machines, avocados can also be packed with top seal machines. These tray sealing machines pack the different types of fruit with a film that is sealed to the top of a plastic tray. The avocado can be packed vacuum or with gas here. This technique is mainly used for 'ready-to-eat' packaging.

• Netlon packaging machines
  • The third option for packing avocados is in a net. This can be done with the netlon packaging machine. With these machines, avocados can be packed, separately or in a tray, in tubular net or in net bags from the roll. Clippers and Girsac machines pack the avocados in net bags. A net packaging machine is usually connected to a weighing machine to achieve the desired weight.
