About used Tray seeding machines

Tray seeding machines can be used to sow a wide variety of flower, plant and vegetable seeds in trays. Tray seeding machines are often assembled in a seeding line, together with a tray filler, a dibbler (hole puncher), a soil sprinkler and a watering unit to enable the trays to be ready for further cultivation in a greenhouse in just one operation.

When selecting a tray seeder it is important that the seeding bar or drum is suited to the type of tray and seed you will be using. If you wish to use different types of seeds and trays, please note that the seeding bars and drums of most tray seeders are interchangeable.

Most tray seeders make use of a pneumatic systems in which the seeds are picked up by vacuum and sowed into the tray. Tray seeders can generally be adjusted very precisely to accommodate single or double sowing. The vacuum suction and discharge power can also be precisely adjusted. The technology used ensures an accurate and reliable result.

The two most commonly used pneumatic tray seeding machines are explained below.

Tray seeders with nozzles or needles

Pneumatic nozzle seeders, such as the Visser Granette, pick up one seed per nozzle (vacuum) and discharge it into the pot or tray cell. The seeding bars is matched in line with the trays. The seeds are sucked up on the nozzle from an open vibrating seed hopper. Different types of seeds can be sown into trays by mounting different needles or nozzles onto the seeder bar. Nozzle seeders are your best choice when sowing small volumes of different seeds because this type of tray seeding machine is relatively easy to adapt.

Drum tray seeding machines

A pneumatic drum seeder sucks the seed up through tiny holes in a sowing drum. The drum revolves in the opposite direction of the sowing conveyor and discharges the seed into the tray cell or pot. Many drum seeders are also equipped with a blowing function to clean the tiny holes. The drums are adapted to the dimensions of the tray and the size of the seed. Drum seeders are suitable for large volumes of seed (high capacity). Additionally, they are capable of sowing heavier types of seeds.
