About used Leek harvesters

Leeks are usually lifted by means of a topbeltlifter mounted on the back and the side of the tractor. This type of leek harvester lifts the leeks by grabbing them between the belts.

How the topbelt lifters operate

A trimmer that is adjustable in height breaks the ground open and slides just underneath the roots of the leeks. The torpedoes above the ground ensure that the leaves of the leeks are fed in between the twin belts. The rubber coated belts picks up the leeks from the ground after which the oscillators shake off the soil from the leeks and the roots. The polishing drums which clean the leeks even more thoroughly after the shakers, are optional. The belts holding the leeks then drop these onto a collecting conveyor (possibly by means of a transfer disc) where the surplus leaf is trimmed. Depending on the type of the leek harvesting machine, the leeks are then laid manually or mechanically in the bins.

Automatic leek harvesting machine

A fully automatic leek harvester enables the leeks to be laid mechanically into the bins. This allows the tractor driver to lift leeks on his own without any other workers behind the tractor. A fully automatic leek harvester makes it possible to harvest leeks quickly and without having to carry out heavy work Various methods are deployed by the different brands of leek lifters for depositing the leeks automatically into the leek bins. In the case of some automatic leek lifters it is necessary to have specially adapted leek bins.

Lifting leeks with a vegetable bed lifter

In addition to the belt lifters or grubbers, leeks can also be pulled up by a vegetable bed lifter. This type of grubber lifts a bed of 3 or 4 rows in one operation. A shear that reciprocates with the oscillators break the ground open around the leaks. A grading chain mesh then separates the leeks from the soil after which workers at the end of the grading chain mesh stack the leeks in the bins.
