About used machines for Lettuce
Iceberg lettuce, butterhead lettuce, lamb’s ear lettuce and rocket are just a few of the many available types of lettuce. Lettuce can be grown in many different ways, such as in a greenhouse in soil or on water (hydroponic), in a dark hall with LED lighting or outside in the open field. Each cultivation method requires its own type of machinery. You will find an overview of some of the most commonly used machines for growing and processing various types of lettuce on this page.
Planting machines
A lettuce transplanter puts soil blocks with lettuce seedlings into the soil by means of conveyor belts. The young plants are planted rather shallowly into the soil by the conveyor belts. Most lettuce planters require human hands to put the young plants onto the conveyor belts. However, an increasing number of manufacturers also have a fully automatic lettuce transplanter in their product range.
Lettuce transplanters are available in various models: attached to the three-point linkage of a tractor, pulled by a tractor or self-propelled. A transplanter can also be used to plant soil blocks with other leafy vegetables, such as iceberg lettuce, endives, celery or seed onions.
Lettuce harvesting conveyor
To harvest lettuce out in the open field – like iceberg lettuce – a harvesting conveyor is used, which is linked to a transport vehicle. After being harvested manually, the lettuce is placed on the harvesting conveyor, which conveys it to the harvest trailer where it is packaged. This enables a broad field to be harvested in one working round. In addition to labour savings this also results in a cleaner product and less damage.
Greenhouse-grown butterhead lettuce can be harvested using a different type of harvesting conveyor. This harvesting conveyor transports the heads of lettuce to the concrete path of the green house, where it is packaged.
Lettuce cutting machines
There is an increasing consumer demand for ready-to-cook vegetables. Growers can meet this demand by investing in lettuce washing machines, lettuce cutting machines and lettuce packaging machines. Many of these machines can be used for other crops as well.
Lettuce washing machines
Before or after it is cut, the lettuce can be washed in a lettuce washing machine. The water jets and the shape of the washing machine’s water basin create a whirlpool effect. This allows the lettuce to be drawn underneath the surface and therefore better washed.
Lettuce packaging machines
How lettuce is packaged depends on the customer’s wishes, the type of lettuce and whether or not it has been cut. The most commonly used are vertical or horizontal flowpack machines.
