Destoners, also known as clod separators, are indispensable when harvesting your vegetables or fruit. During harvesting of potatoes, carrots, beets and flower bulbs, you also get stones and clods. These stones and clods must then be separated. This preferably happens at the start of the processing line so that, for instance, no damage to cutting machines can occur during harvest processing. 

Different types of clod and stone separators

Stone separators and clod separators come in different types, such as pump destoners and cyclone destoners, both of which work with water. In addition, there are optical quality sorting machines that can recognise stones and clods to then remove them from the stream. Finally, there are also mechanical stone separators. 

Destoners in combination with a drum washer for potatoes and carrots

Some destoners combine destoning with washing the potatoes and carrots. In this case, destoning is done using an adjustable vertical water flow, which carries the tuber crop to an output conveyor or washing drum. Because the stones are heavier than the vegetables, they sink to the bottom of the de-stoner. The stones and clods then end up on a belt that disposes of them. This type of destoner is often used in combination with a drum washer. The advantage of this method is high capacity while separating the stones in a product-friendly way. 

Mechanical stone and clod separator 

The operation of the mechanical clod separator is based on the fact that potatoes are springy and stones and clods are not. The supplied crop, including stones and clods, first arrives on a rotating drum. The elasticity of the potato, which is not present with stones and clods, provides the separation. The potatoes jump over an adjustable separator plate, while stones and clods fall in front of it. This creates a clean product flow.
