About second-hand Shrink wrap packaging machines

Packaging is becoming an increasingly important link in the processing of fruit and vegetables. Supermarkets and buyers set high standards for the way products are delivered. For example, if you grow cucumbers, peppers, lettuce, or aubergines, these may need to be individually wrapped in tight-fitting film.

A shrink film packaging machine is a type of packaging machine that helps you package your products quickly, neatly, and sustainably. The film fits tightly around the product and provides protection against dirt, moisture, and damage, while also keeping the product looking attractive and fresh.

For many growers, a second-hand shrink film packaging machine is a smart investment. These machines are significantly more affordable than new models, resulting in a shorter payback period – especially if you regularly switch crops or packaging methods.

On this page, you will find the current range of used shrink film packaging machines at Duijndam Machines.

How does a shrink film packaging machine work?

A shrink film packaging machine wraps products in a thin layer of plastic film. First, the product is covered with film, after which the whole is briefly heated. The heat causes the film to shrink tightly around the product, forming a kind of “second skin.” This protects the product from external influences and ensures a neat presentation.

Depending on the type of machine, this process can be manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic. In more advanced machines, the shrink and seal settings can be adjusted via the control panel, allowing various types of products to be packaged effectively.

What types of shrink film machines are there?

Shrink film packaging machines can be divided into three main types:

  • Manual corner sealers
  • Semi-automatic corner sealers (L-sealers)
  • Fully automatic shrink film packaging machines

Manual corner sealer (shrink dome or dome sealer)

A manual corner sealer is a compact machine with a transparent dome. The operator places the product inside the folded shrink film and slides it into the work area. After closing the dome, the film is sealed and shrunk using heat. Sealing and shrinking occur in a single movement under the transparent hood. Once the cycle is complete, the dome opens and the packaged product can be removed. Manual corner sealers are ideal for small to medium production runs and suitable for a wide variety of products.

Semi-automatic corner sealer (L-sealer)

With a semi-automatic L-sealer, the operator places the product in the film and starts the machine with the push of a button. The sealing frame closes automatically, seals the film in an L-shape, and then reopens. The product is then automatically transported via a conveyor belt to a separate shrink tunnel, where the film is tightened.

These machines are ideal for medium production volumes and offer more speed and convenience than manual models. On average, the capacity is 2.5 times higher than that of a manual corner sealer.

Fully automatic shrink film packaging machines

For large production volumes and serial work, fully automatic shrink film packaging machines are the best choice. There are two types:

  • Fully automatic corner sealers (L-sealers) Products are automatically placed on a conveyor belt, wrapped in film, and finished via a shrink tunnel. Product size options are somewhat limited, but the speed is high.
  • Intermittent or ‘box motion’ side sealers These machines use separate side and cross seals, allowing products of virtually unlimited length to be packaged. They have even higher capacity than fully automatic corner sealers. The shrinking process also takes place in a separate tunnel.

What are the advantages of shrink film packaging?

Using shrink film offers several advantages:

Optimal product protection: Fits closely and protects against moisture, dust, dirt, damage, and drying out.
Strength: Durable, tear-resistant material.
Professional appearance: Transparent film provides good product visibility and a neat presentation.
Recyclability: POF and PE films are fully recyclable.
Space-saving: The tight fit means the packaging takes up minimal extra space.

What types of shrink films are there?

Depending on the product and application, different types of film are used:

  • Polyethylene (PE film): Strong, stretchable, ideal for larger or heavier products.
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC film): Clear and commonly used for non-food items, but not suitable for direct contact with food.
  • Polyolefin (POF film): Crystal-clear, strong, suitable for food products, and 100% recyclable.

For packaging fresh vegetables such as cucumbers or peppers, POF shrink film is most commonly used.
