About second-hand machines for Open field vegetables

Duijndam Machines has the world’s largest and most diverse assortment of used agricultural machines for vegetables grown outdoors. Since some of these machines are not (being used) available in all corners of the world, we are approached on a daily basis, by farmers and horticulturists from all over the world.

This category shows agricultural machines and machines for the open field horticulture. The associated cultivations are, for instance: potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, sprouts, leeks and asparagus, using the filters on this page you can view all cultivations and accompanying machines.

How are open field vegetables grown?

The vegetables are grown outdoors, on the land. As a result, the seasons and the weather largely influence the growth. But also sowing and harvesting must be done at the exact right times.

Every year there is a similar cycle of:

  • Soil furrowing;
  • Sowing;
  • Weed control;
  • Harvesting;
  • Keeping or processing immediately, for instance washing, sorting and packing.

Special machines are available for each part of the cycle.

Soil furrowing machines

There are different types of soil for open field vegetables, such as light sandy soil, peat soil and heavy clay soil. The type of soil present also determines which vegetables will grow well in that location. Depending on the crop, there are specific machines that are suitable for the cultivation.

In order to keep the soil healthy (and not exhaust it), different crops are grown on a plot every year. This is known as crop rotation. This way, the harvests can be retained for a longer period of time, while the soil is being optimally used. View the different soil furrowing machines here.

Seeding machines

There are different seeding machines, mechanical, electric and pneumatic.

A seeding machine is functional when it places the seeds in the exact right spot. Via a sow pipe, the seed will fail into a trench in the soil. In front of the sow pipe, there is a trencher that puts the soil aside and thus makes room for the seed. A layer of soil is placed on top of the seed and pressed by use of a pressure roller. Weed control

There are different ways to protect crops, the most widely used agricultural machines are obviously the hoe and spraying machines. But also weed burners and harrows are often deployed to optimise the soil. Anything to allow the crops to grow optimally. The different methods help to fight weeds, disease, plagues, for the growth of crops and the management of vegetation. Read more about weed control here.

Harvesting

A specific harvesting machine was developed for every type of vegetables, to ensure that the crop is harvested in the most efficient and product-friendly way. But there are also harvesting machines that can be applied for multiple vegetables. As a result, the investment in a high-quality harvesting can even be better justified. Processing machines for vegetables (vegetable processing machines)

More and more consumers go for vegetables that have already been washed and cut. Partly due to this, also an increasing number of growers choose to invest in processing machines for their vegetables, such as machines for washing, sorting, cutting and packing. Usually, these vegetable processing machines are quite expensive. As a result, it is beneficial for small of medium-sized growers to opt for a used machine.
