About second-hand Onion neck toppers

Onion neck toppers are used to top off the neck of onions and flower bulbs. Usually onions are harvested and stored with at least 10 cm of foliage (top), while in the shops this neck/ foliage may only be a maximum of 2.5 cm long. Just before packaging and sorting, the onions are moved across the onion topper which cuts off the surplus foliage. The outside layer of skin will also be removed when the dry onion moves across the onion neck topping machine, resulting in the onion becoming a golden yellow colour. Onion toppers come in two different versions, a roller topper and a knife topper.

Roller neck topper for onions

The two rollers in the topper machine turn in opposite directions to ensure that the tops of the onions are pulled off. The three spiral revolutions of the solid iron rollers ensure that the top is removed without damaging the onion.

Knife neck topper for onions

The foliage / neck (top) is not pulled off the onions by a knife cutting machine, but cut off by the fast-revolving blades. Special vibrating motors start the sieves vibrating. The onion floats as it were above the sieves. A strong air stream is created by the high rotational speed and the special shape of the knives. This sucks the tops of the onions between the bars of the vibrating sieves and they are cut off by the sharp blades under the sieve. This system of topping works efficiently and does not damage the onion. Onions, flower bulbs and suchlike are flawlessly topped by the high blade rotational speed and the special construction. The width between the bars depends on whether the knife onion topper is used for onions (onion plants, small onions, picklers and shallots) or flower bulbs.
