Onion toppers are used for trimming the tops of onions and flower bulbs. Often, onions are harvested and stored with foliage (tops) of at least 10 cm, while in stores, this foliage must be no more than 2.5 cm. Just before packaging and sorting, the onions pass through the onion topper, which cuts off the excess foliage. By feeding the onions dry through the onion topping machine, the outer skin of the onion is also removed, giving the onions a golden-yellow color. Onion toppers come in two different versions: a roller topper and a blade topper.

Roller Onion Topper

The first type of onion topper is the roller topper. This version of the onion topping machine is a more basic machine for trimming foliage. The two counter-rotating rollers of the topper machine ensure that the onion tops are pulled off. The three spiral turns around the solid iron rollers ensure that the onions are topped firmly but without damage.

Blade Onion Topper

In onion topping machines with blades, the foliage (tops) is not pulled off but cut by rapidly rotating blades. Special vibration motors set the vibrating sieves in motion. The onions are transported as if floating above the sieves. Due to the high rotation speed and special shape of the blades, a strong airflow is created. This airflow pulls the onion tops between the slats of the vibrating sieve, where they are cut just below the sieve by sharp blades. This topping system works efficiently without damaging the onions. Due to the high blade speed and special construction, onions, flower bulbs, and similar items are flawlessly topped. The spacing between the slats depends on whether the blade topper is used for onions (plant onions, triplets, picklers, and shallots) or flower bulbs.

Holaras Onion Topper

A popular brand of blade toppers is the Holaras onion topping machines. This brand from the Achterhoek region, originally a local blacksmith, specializes in onion machinery. In addition to their onion toppers, we also sell their onion harvesting machines.

The Holaras blade toppers come in three variants: the AS-10, the basic model, the AS-15, and the largest version, the AS-25. All three machines top onions and/or flower bulbs using blades, with differences in their capacity. The basic model, the Holaras AS-10, is equipped with three blades and can process 10 to 15 tons per hour. The AS-20, with four blades, increases the capacity to 15-20 tons per hour. The top model, the Holaras AS-25, has six blades, allowing it to process an impressive 20-25 tons per hour. All models are suitable for topping both onions and flower bulbs.

The topper operates using vibrating sieves. These are easy to replace and available in various types, making it possible to top all kinds of onions and bulbs. From onions to shallots, they can be topped effortlessly with the Holaras. A steady supply is recommended, which can be achieved using a dosing bunker or pre-sorter.

Perfect Onion Topper

Another popular brand for onion toppers is Perfect EU. Their onion toppers use rollers to remove the foliage from onions or flower bulbs.

Unlike Holaras onion topping machines, those from Perfect EU are often smaller and simpler. These toppers are especially suitable for smaller growers who need to remove foliage from small batches of onions or flower bulbs.

The spacing between the rollers determines which size of onions or flower bulbs the topper is suitable for. Whereas blade toppers allow easy sieve replacement, this is not the case for roller toppers. Therefore, it is important to consider the appropriate roller spacing when selecting a roller onion topper. For example, small rollers of approximately 2.4 cm ø can only be used for topping shallots, small onions, and bulbs but not for large onions.
