About second-hand Plastic mulch layer machines

In the cultivation of delicate vegetables and fruits grown in open fields—such as zucchini, asparagus, strawberries, sweet potatoes, melons, and cucumbers—the soil is often covered with (plastic) film. This process is carried out using a mulch layer.

We supply a wide range of mulch-laying machines. In addition to our usual second-hand offerings, we now also provide many new mulch layers. Thanks to our experience, we offer reliable, robust, and affordable machines that meet the demands of modern cultivation.

Depending on the type of mulch layer, it is possible to perform multiple operations in a single pass, such as forming beds, laying irrigation hoses, and even planting.

Advantages of a mulch layer

The use of mulch film in cultivation offers several advantages:

  • Less weeds and diseases: Covering with film prevents unwanted growth and reduces disease pressure.
  • Optimal soil temperature: Black film can increase soil temperature by up to 5°C, resulting in faster growth and earlier production. White film can have a cooling effect and slow growth, for example in asparagus cultivation.
  • More efficient use of water and fertilizers: Due to its insulating properties, up to 35% less water and fertilizer is required. With drip irrigation (T-tape), water is applied very precisely.
  • Cleaner products: Fruits and vegetables do not lie directly on the soil, resulting in less contamination and a lower risk of rot.

How a mulch layer works

Mulch layers operate according to an efficient and proven principle. The film is unrolled from a roll over the cultivation bed, after which discs press the edges of the film into the soil. This keeps the film tightly stretched over the bed or ridge.

Depending on the crop, different applications are possible:

  • For crops such as strawberries, zucchini, and sweet potatoes, holes are made in the film to plant crops.
  • For asparagus, the film is used as a cover without holes.

Supplier of new mulch layers with large discs

We are a distributor of new mulch layers for the Benelux and Germany. These machines are often chosen for their robust construction, efficient operation, and competitive pricing.

Key features:

  • ✅ Large discs for optimal processing of the film
  • ✅ Very solid and reliable design
  • ✅ Available in multi-row configurations
  • ✅ Optional with: hose layer for drip tape & bed former

The large discs ensure that the film is firmly worked into the soil after a cultivator tine has created a groove. This results in a tight and durable final result.

Planting in plastic mulch

Once the film has been laid, a special mulch planting machine is required for planting or seeding. A standard planting machine is not suitable, as it creates a furrow in the soil—which is not possible with mulch film.

Mulch planting machines:

  • Automatically create holes at the correct planting distance
  • Are suitable for various crops
  • Can significantly speed up the planting process

There are also simpler machines that only punch holes in the film, after which planting can be done manually.

Biodegradable mulch film

Biodegradable mulch film, for example based on starch, is increasingly being used. This type of film offers the same benefits as traditional plastic film but is much more environmentally friendly.

An important advantage is that this film does not always need to be removed after cultivation. In many cases, it can simply be ploughed under, after which the material naturally decomposes in the soil.

Well-known mulch layer brands

There are various manufacturers producing mulch layers. At Duijndam, in addition to our own mulch layers, we also regularly have machines in stock from popular brands such as Basrijs and Ferrari.

Frequently asked questions about Plastic mulch layer machines

What is a mulch layer?

A mulch layer is an agricultural machine that lays plastic or biodegradable film over beds to protect crops and optimize growth.

Why use a mulch layer?

Some crops benefit from foil. This can ensure fewer weeds, better temperature control, more efficient water use and cleaner products. A foil layer is used to lay this foil.

Which crops are grown using mulch film?

Mulch film is commonly used for strawberries, asparagus, zucchinis, sweet potatoes, melons, and cucumbers.

How does a mulch layer work?

The film is unrolled from a roll and discs press the edges into the soil, covering the bed securely.

Can a mulch layer perform multiple tasks at once?

Yes, some machines can form beds, lay film, install irrigation lines, and even plant in a single pass.

What is the difference between black and white mulch film?

Black film increases soil temperature and accelerates growth, while white film lowers temperature and slows growth.

How much water and fertilizer can be saved?

Using mulch film can reduce water and fertilizer use by up to 35%.

Is there also environmentally friendly film available?

Yes, biodegradable mulch film is available. This type of film is made from natural materials and can be ploughed into the soil after use, where it breaks down naturally.

Can a mulch layer be combined with drip irrigation?

Yes, many machines can be equipped with drip tape laying systems.

What are the benefits of large discs on a mulch layer?

Large discs ensure better and more secure placement of the film into the soil.
