An asparagus washing, cutting and sorting machine, as its name implies, has three functions. The first is to clean the asparagus, the second to cut them to the desired length and the third to sort them into various categories. Sorting and cleaning are among the most important tasks for preparing asparagus for the market.

Asparagus washing machines

The asparagus washing machine is a conveyor belt provided with plastic studs onto which the asparagus to be cleaned are laid. The belt will then convey the asparagus along the cutter. The cutter will cut the asparagus to the desired length. The washing unit contains a number of rotating and bi-directionally moving brushes that clean the asparagus. To ensure thorough cleaning of the asparagus, water is sprayed underneath the asparagus under pressure. The sorting crates are placed on a table on the last section of the machine and are arranged according to quality and thickness. The asparagus are subsequently sorted by colour, stem diameter and stem length. This procedure will enable 250 kg of asparagus to be cleaned per hour.

Fully automatic asparagus sorting machines

The fully automatic asparagus sorting machine was developed to sort asparagus according to length, thickness and straightness. This asparagus sorter also comes equipped with a photocell that assesses visible quality criteria such as colour, rust, hollow stems and open heads. Finally, every asparagus is weighed. A computer processes the data collected by the two cameras and the weighing unit and determines, based on parameters set by the grower, the exit point to which the asparagus will be sent.
