About second-hand Onion haulm toppers
The removal of onion foliage provides huge labour savings when lifting and topping and tailing onions. Hence many farmers trim off the foliage of the onions in a single operation directly before lifting them. Here are a few tips to adjust the haulm topper even better.
Adjusting an onion foliage topper
The trimming height of an onion topper can be set by adjusting the spindles. The perfect length of an onion top is at the lowest point where the leaves split. Set the onion leaf topper in such a way that it knocks off the foliage at this height. It will cost more energy the more foliage goes into storage. Moreover, it will be harder to take the onions out of storage. If they are trimmed too close , bacteria and fungi can penetrate the neck of the bulbs more easily. Keep the r.p.m. high for the most consistent topping.
Many onion haulm toppers are equipped with automatic depth control: a ground level sensor follows the surface and controls the trimming height via a cylinder. You must ensure that the sensor glides exactly between the rows of onions. The sensors can usually be adjusted with a few bolts on the frame. The surface sensor runs between the two outer rows as onions in these rows often grow the deepest.
Levelling the onion haulm topper
In many onion toppers the rotors are positioned diagonally behind each other in the machine. When the haulm trimmer is tilted forwards or backwards, the left and right side trimming heights are not the same. After all, the rotors on one side of the onion trimmer are further away from the tractor than the rotors on the other side. So set the onion haulm topper level by adjusting the top bar. The foliage trimmer is of course provided with a slot.
Front onion topper
Onions can be lifted efficiently by combining topping and lifting within a single operation. This is only possible with a foliage topper up front when it is equipped with a side chute to take the foliage away. The flap of the side chute just has to touch the ground it slides over so that the foliage is not thrown into the adjacent bed. Keep the forward motion at a low speed so that the onion trimmer is able to suck up the flattened foliage as well.
