About second-hand Tray seeding machines

Tray seeding machines are used to sow a variety of seeds for flowers, plants, and vegetables into trays. Typically, tray seeders are placed in a seeding line along with a tray filler, hole puncher, spreader, and a watering station (nozzle), allowing the trays to be prepared for cultivation in the greenhouse in one operation.

When choosing a specific type of tray seeder, the seed bar or seeding drum should be matched to the type of tray and seed. If you use different types of seeds and trays, the seed bars and seeding drums are often interchangeable.

Most tray seeders utilize pneumatic systems, where the seeds are picked up and sown in the trays using vacuum suction. Single or double seeding, vacuum strength, and blow-off strength can be adjusted, allowing for precise tuning of the seeder. This technique ensures accurate and reliable results.

Below, the two most common types of pneumatic tray seeding machines are explained.

TRAY SEEDING MACHINES WITH NOZZLES AND NEEDLES

Pneumatic needle seeders, such as the Visser Granette, vacuum one seed per needle (nozzle) and blow it off into the pot or tray cell. The seed bars are adjusted to fit the trays, and the seeds are sucked from an open vibrating seed container. By placing different needles or nozzles on the seed bar, various types of seeds can be sown in the trays. Needle seeders are most suitable for sowing small batches, as this type of tray seeding machine is relatively easy to convert.

TRAY SEEDING MACHINES WITH DRUMS

A pneumatic drum seeder picks up the seeds through small holes in a seeding drum (seed roller). The drum rotates in the opposite direction of the seeding belt and blows the seeds into the tray cell or pot. Many drum seeders also have a blowing function to clean the small holes. The drums are tailored to the dimensions of the tray and the size of the seed. Drum seeding machines are suitable for larger seeding operations (higher capacity). They can also handle heavier types of seeds.

VISSER TRAY SEEDING MACHINES

Visser Horti Systems is a manufacturer of tray seeding machines that has been designing and producing machines for horticultural nurseries since 1967. Through continuous collaboration with growers, Visser's machines are perfectly aligned with the needs and demands of the market.

Since seeds are valuable products, it is important to have accurate and fast seeding. Visser offers seeding machines for all types of seeds, with their seeding lines always focused on precision, continuity, and uniformity.

Due to the popularity of Visser's tray seeding machines, we have an extensive selection of their used machines. Our range includes complete Visser seeding lines, as well as individual tray filling machines and drum seeding machines.

Frequently asked questions about Tray Seeding Machines

What is a tray seeding machine and how does it work?

A tray seeding machine is a device used to automatically sow seeds into the cells of trays. Most machines use pneumatic technology: they vacuum up individual seeds and blow them accurately into the tray cells. This ensures fast and uniform sowing.

What should I consider when buying a second-hand tray seeding machine?

Key factors include compatibility with your trays and seeds, the condition of the seeding head or drum, adjustable settings (such as vacuum and blow-off pressure), and the ability to replace parts. It's important that second-hand machines are thoroughly tested and in good working order.

What is the difference between a needle seeder and a drum seeder?

A needle seeder (such as the Visser Granette) uses nozzles to pick up individual seeds, making it ideal for small batches and flexible use. A drum seeder uses a rotating drum with small holes to sow seeds and is better suited for high-volume sowing and heavier seeds.

Can I use different seed types in one tray seeding machine?

Yes, many tray seeders can handle a variety of seeds. By changing seeding heads, drums, or nozzles, the machine can be adjusted to match different seed types and tray sizes.

Does Duijndam Machines also offer complete seeding lines?

Yes, in addition to individual tray seeders, we also offer complete seeding lines. These often include tray fillers, dibble units, covering units, and watering stations, frequently from reputable brands like Visser and are ready to use in your nursery.

What are the benefits of a pneumatic tray seeding machine?

Pneumatic seeding technology offers high precision and consistent seed placement. Many machines allow you to adjust settings to suit different crops. This leads to better germination results and reduced seed waste.
