About second-hand machines for Garlic

Garlic is a well-known plant that is part of the narcissus family. Other familiar plants in the Allium genus include onions, leeks, and chives. Garlic has been used as a flavor enhancer for ages, globally. Originally from South and Central Asia, China is currently the largest producer of garlic worldwide, accounting for 73% of the total production.

Garlic is a crop that thrives in well-draining soil and full sun. It's no wonder that countries like China, Egypt, India, and Spain are among the major cultivators of this crop. Modern garlic cultivation involves a range of machines, from planting to processing; nearly everything is done mechanically to maintain high efficiency and profit margins.

Acquiring new machines for garlic cultivation can be a significant investment, especially if the entire processing is done in-house, making the payback period considerable. That's why an increasing number of growers opt for used garden and agricultural machines. These machines cost a fraction of the price but, when selected correctly, can still last for many years. Duijndam Machines always has a large stock of used machines, including those for garlic.

On this page, you'll find all the used machines for garlic that we currently have in stock. Each machine's specific page provides detailed information and photos. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us so that we can assist you personally.

Garlic machines from J.J. Broch

Especially garlic machines from  J.J. Broch are well-known. J.J. Broch is a Spanish brand that has been specializing in garlic machines for 15 years. This manufacturer produces garlic machines for the entire process, from planting to processing the garlic.

Planting Machines for Garlic

Garlic is planted using cloves, unlike onions that use "seed onions." Special pneumatic garlic planting machines are used to plant cloves in the ground. The operation of a pneumatic garlic planting machine is similar to a regular pneumatic seeder, but these machines are suitable for larger "seeds."

The pneumatic seeder works by creating a vacuum that sucks in a garlic clove each time. The vacuum is then broken, causing the clove to land in the seed furrow and be planted at the preset depth.

A pneumatic garlic planting machine can plant cloves at very precise distances and depths based on preset values.

Garlic Harvesting Machines

When it's time to harvest garlic in the summer, this is generally done mechanically with a belt clamp harvester. There are two versions of this machine: one with a binding machine that bundles the garlic immediately after harvesting, and one with a knife that cuts the foliage. Machines suitable for harvesting similar crops like leeks and onions are often used for garlic harvesting. Garlic is typically harvested in 1 to 4 rows at a time.

Processing Machines for Garlic

After harvesting, it's time to process garlic. The type of processing machine needed depends on how you deliver your final product. Garlic is generally sorted on the farm, but it can also be divided (from bulbs to cloves), peeled, or packaged.

Sorting Machines for Garlic

Garlic is sorted by the size of the bulb. The sorting process is simple but effective; garlic is loaded onto a conveyor belt equipped with progressively larger gaps from front to back. The belt vibrates to ensure that the garlic falls into the right place. Only the smallest garlic falls through the first belt, so that in the last stage, only the largest ones remain.

Dividing Machines for Garlic

Garlic can be sold per bulb, but it can also be divided into individual cloves. This can serve two purposes; the individual cloves can be used as planting material or for consumption. Loose cloves are often used in meal kits from companies like HelloFresh and supermarkets.

Peeling Machines for Garlic

Peeling machines take processing a step further. These machines peel the garlic cloves so that they can be processed immediately. This is useful, for example, if your garlic is used in the food industry or is made into garlic powder.

Packaging Machines for Garlic

Finally, garlic can also be packaged so that it can be delivered directly to the end-user. Garlic, especially that sold in supermarkets, is generally packaged in nets by weight. Net clippers and weighers are used to package garlic in this way. The weigher can be set to a specific weight, ensuring that the garlic is packaged in the right quantity. A net clipper then creates a net around the garlic, which is closed with a metal clip.
