Planting Asparagus

Asparagus can be planted in two different ways: from seeds or as asparagus crowns. Generally, the second method is chosen because it allows for faster harvesting. The asparagus crowns are purchased from an asparagus plant nursery and can be planted in the ground. Asparagus thrives best in sandy soil. However, green asparagus can also be cultivated in slightly heavier soil.

If you're growing green asparagus, simply planting the asparagus crowns is sufficient. However, if you're growing white asparagus, the plants require some extra attention. Firstly, the soil around the asparagus plants needs to be raised using asparagus ridge cultivators. This creates the well-known lines in the field, also known as "asparagus ridges." These ridges are essential for growing white asparagus because they keep the shoots underground, preventing photosynthesis and keeping the shoots white.

Covering Asparagus Ridges with Film

As mentioned before, cultivating green asparagus is much easier than cultivating white asparagus. With white asparagus, after creating the asparagus ridges, the soil needs to be covered with plastic film. This serves a dual purpose: to heat the soil with dark-colored film or cool it with white film, allowing the plant to grow faster or slower and increase the yield, and to prevent the asparagus from emerging above the ground and changing color. The film is laid using a film layer machine, which neatly and tightly covers the asparagus ridges.

After harvesting, the film needs to be removed from the ridges. To simplify this task, a film wrapping machine can be used.

Asparagus Washing Machines

Unfortunately, very few machines can be used for harvesting white asparagus itself. This is a task that largely needs to be done by hand. However, after harvesting, various machines can be employed for processing the "white gold."

Firstly, the freshly harvested asparagus needs to be cleaned of soil and other impurities. This is done using an asparagus washer. The machine efficiently cleans the asparagus by utilizing brushes and water. The asparagus washing machine also has a knife to cut the asparagus to a uniform length.

White asparagus comes out of the ground with a tough and not very flavorful outer skin. This is not consumed by consumers.
